Google's Worst Day Ever, and the Click It's Losing

Alphabet lost about $500 billion in value on 29 October 2026. The fear behind it is people asking an AI instead of clicking a link, and Pew's data shows what that does to clicks.

On 29 October 2026, Alphabet's shares fell about 13%, "the steepest drop on record", and CNBC put the loss at roughly $500 billion in market value. The previous record was 11.63%, in March 2020. The reason is a question about how you look things up.

Made with AI: AI video and AI voice. The people, the shop and the numbers on the stats screen are made up.

How Google earns

Its biggest business is the ads beside search results: $63.35 billion from July to September, up 12% on a year earlier. That growth was 19% in the first quarter and 17% in the second, and it came in below analysts' estimates for a second quarter running. Google said search query growth was the strongest in five years and pointed to currency.

What an AI summary does to clicks

Pew Research looked at the Google searches of 900 US adults in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits; without one, 15%. Links inside the summary were clicked in 1% of visits. Google says AI Overviews are available in more than 200 countries and territories.

And it's still spending

Alphabet kept its 2026 spending plan at $195 to $205 billion, mostly for AI data centres, and its free cash flow was negative $9.07 billion for the quarter, against about negative $2.7 billion expected.

What it means for you

  • Open Google Search Console (free) and compare clicks, not just impressions, with the same months last year.
  • If impressions hold and clicks fall, answers are being read on the results page.
  • The exception: Pew's figures are US data from March 2025, and in its sample only 18% of searches showed a summary.

Not investment advice.
